Studying Communication & Rhetoric in Pedagogy & Technology
Why SCRiPT Lab?
The central interest driving our lab is the role of writing in evolving academic communication. The SCRiPT Lab is a space where we meet and share our ideas and concerns about communications in academia and the professions, especially writing, and especially in response to the advent of Large Language Models.
Our Mission
We are concerned with how writing is perceived and valued in the age of AI, and about teaching and developing writing skills in this new context. Our focus is on conducting research to explore these ideas and concerns, our aim is to gain funding for our studies, and our goal is to share the process and results of our work through this website and conventional academic avenues. By doing so, we contribute to scholarly and public understandings of written communication in our times.
SCRiPT Lab takes on a limited number of research projects each year and includes each project’s investigators as Research Associates for the duration of the project. All members of the lab contribute to all projects through regular discussion groups and presentations. We welcome interest from researchers across institutions who want to participate in our research community. Would you like to join us?
It all started when…
SCRiPT Lab was founded on March 25, 2026 in Toronto, Ontario by Dr. Boba Samuels, in collaboration with Dr. Michael Cournoyea and Dr. Marvin Lam. The lab was established to bring together people and research projects to create a collaborative research group, supporting and challenging each other to conduct impactful work.
